Dear Diary,

Today I am going to tell my parents that I am adopting a dog. Both of my parents might disagree with my decisions, but they will disagree for different reasons. By using the “Narrow Pass” strategy, I will be able to talk to a composite audience and assure both parties that my decision to adopt a shelter dog is valid.

My mom’s main concern is that I will not be able to take care of a dog by myself, but I will avoid this by mentioning all of the free time that I have in my schedule and emphasizing that I do my studying at home and would be home with the dog when I am not in class. I would also mention that this would improve my work ethic and work quality because I a dog would create a more positive and cheerful environment.

My dad, on the other hand, would be concerned about the dog’s behavior. I would avoid this by explaining that not all shelter dogs were abused or problematic in their previous home and that dogs are given up for reasons such as divorce, not having enough space, etc. I would also assure him that I have met the dog that I plan to adopt before and that the dog was always very good tempered.
